History

The short version of a longer story.

I'm British, 51, and have spent my career building companies. I read Philosophy at the University of Cambridge — a training in asking awkward questions that has proved surprisingly useful for a life spent starting businesses.

I began in finance, working in fund management as an investment director at the Swiss asset manager GAM, as a partner at THS Partners, and as a partner and co-founder of Arete Research in London. But I kept being pulled back to building things. In the early 2000s I founded Genius Sports, which turned live sports into structured data and eventually sold for $280 million in 2018. In 2012 I founded PythonAnywhere, a platform that lets developers run Python entirely in the browser.

In 2019 I moved to Los Angeles to start Just Insure, after realising that the people who would benefit most from usage-based car insurance — lower-income drivers penalised by blunt measures like credit score and ZIP code — were the ones being overcharged. Just prices insurance on how you actually drive. Today I split my time between LA and London, and I'm building a couple of new things alongside it.

Away from work, I'm married with two children. I fly, and I have an enduring weakness for detective fiction.
